HVAC Maintenance Tips
As we begin winding down from the summer, fall looms ahead of us, with winter not far behind. This is a great time to do a bit of maintenance on your HVAC unit to make sure that you will be ready for the changes in temperature that are coming soon.
Here are some simple tips for your HVAC to make sure everything stays in proper working order.
Check for Drafts
Although this is not related to your actual unit, it is still worth doing. Any drafts coming through the doors and windows in your home are going to make your unit work extra hard to keep your home comfortably warm. Taking the time now to locate drafty areas will allow you to seal them before the cooler weather hits. Your unit will function better as a result.
This is simple enough, but sometimes ignored. If you notice any buzzing, rattling, grinding, or thumping from your system, you could have a problem somewhere that needs tending to. Likewise, be aware of any issues in performance, such as weak airflow or spotty heating. The earlier you notice and address an issue, the less damage it can inflict.
Replace Your Air Filters
In order to function at its best, your unit needs to be able to move air freely, which it will be unable to do if your filter becomes very dirty. This is a good time to check and replace them, if necessary. Inspect the filter for signs of dust and dirt buildup. Even if your filter seems relatively clean, this is your opportunity to clean it, though you are better to simply replace it. This is a quick and easy tip that should be done seasonally to ensure that your unit continues to function efficiently.
Check Your Vents
As with checking your filters, this is something to be done regularly. In fact, doing them both at the same time is one easy way to remember. You want to ensure that your vents are in good shape to avoid the spread of dust – or worse, mould – in your home.
Check Your Registers
An often-overlooked way of saving money and conserving heat is to check your registers and open or close them as needed to heat only the areas of your home that you want to heat. Important to note, however, is that closing too many registers will result in an imbalance of air pressure in the system.
Reprogram Your Thermostat
If you have a programmable thermostat, reprogramming it as the days begin to grow cooler is a good idea. You can set it to lower temperatures when no one is home or when everyone is snug in bed. If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, it might be worth your while to invest in one.
Clean the Outside Unit
Don’t overlook the outside unit of your HVAC. Check it out regularly to keep it clear of twigs, leaves, and other debris. Trim plants and shrubs to keep them at a distance of three feet. Wipe down the inside and outside of the unit to remove dirt, or use a gentle spray from your garden hose if necessary.
Have Your HVAC Professionally Inspected
A professional inspection by Clean Air Canada is a good idea if it has been some time since your last one. Proper maintenance will keep your unit functional and energy-efficient. This should ideally be done at least twice per year.
